Note: This journal is for both Vash and Knives/Nai, as they are rarely separate.

AU premise: "What if in one reality things actually go pretty well?"

A lot of canon events simply .. don't occur, early or later. People don't meet up, or never are born to begin with, oops.

Some years before the twins are born, Rem and Bill team up in their protests in any form of experimentation on Tessla, who thusly survives, and is more or less raised by the two, entering stasis with them when their shifts were over. Upon the arirval of Vash and Knives, all three closed ranks and forbade any experimentation either.

The Great Fall is the result of certain little plant children playing with controls they shouldn't, and is the FIRST emergency, not the latter, deliberate one. Between Tessla, Bill and Rem, a lot of people survive, but .. well, not everyone or we wouldn't have a series. It takes a couple years for the twins to re-locate their little family and proceed to have as much of a normal life as one can hope for in No Man's Land. Aboard the mostly intact SEEDs ship, the Independents allow for some tests and experiments, and learn to control their powers and their nature through cooperation.

Eventually, age catches up first to Bill, then to Rem, who are considered heros (alongside their 'daughter' Tessla) for preventing the loss of everyone and everything. They are Known Figures and the closest to folk heros the population has. The longer time passes, the more exaggerated their heroics become, as is the way of things. Because of their ongoing guilt over being involved in the Fall to begin with, and wanting to give some back as best they can while also helping their OWN species, Vash and Nai (often nicknamed Knives thanks to the blades he's specialized in being able to create) have put their century and a half lifespans and certain biological advantages over humans to become the best plant technicians on the planet. If there's a problem, they can fix it. It helps when you can just... ASK what's wrong.

They're well known for this, and are also known for being tough but pretty fair - they don't tolerate the abuse and overuse of plants, and through Knives' insistence re-education comes first, but if that fails, mistreated plants get .... redistributed to better hands. What they can't accomplish through skill, they can accomplish through sheer intimidation; they're good enough at fighting and at bluffing to put the fear of God into people when push comes to shove, without the need for killing.

Since Rem's involved, they're ... not. at all keen on killing.

Without the trauma of Tessla's mutilated corpse, Nai remains optimistic and broadly likes humans a fair bit, forgiving of their shortsightedness and endless mistakes that his brother is less thrilled with. Vash's strong sense of justice and intolerance of cruelty means they can and do interfere in trouble if they stumble upon it, plant related or not, and few people in organized cities are willing to irritate the best two techs on the entire planet for fear they'll be denied service later.

Which they wouldn't be, of course, but they don't need to know that.

The twins are not as keenly honed in combat as their other-universe counterparts, they haven't needed it. But they are very good shots regardless, and often practice on each other with nonlethal weapons in order to keep their skills sharp and aims as keen as possible. With better control over his natural powers, Nai defaults more to melee than a gun, but he can and will use one when the situation calls for it. Very rarely are they apart, and they seem to have a remarkable knack for knowing exactly where the other is at at any given time.

Life is looking up, especially since Vash has a pretty good idea of how to make more plants, so nobody has to be pushed to the point of exhaustion ever again..
